Week 5 in K1

UDIS inspires internationally-minded, balanced

learners who thrive and become active global citizens.

Friday our special day

Every Friday we celebrate our learning (Golden Time)

It is a reward when we listen, take turns, and share, we are kind and helpful, we look after the things in our classroom.

This week we celebrated with parachute games. legos, blocks, and painting

Wellbeing/Meditation

This is an important start of our day and week. We begin our day with meditation and this week we are focusing on YOGA

Learners have been really enthusiastic and active. We did 'We are going on a bear hunt yoga'

Mathematics

This week learners were introduced with the calendar and our class timetable. We focused mainly on days of the week and work towards the initial sounds. We have been learning to recognise the date, day, and month. The main focus of the calendar time daily is to familiarise learners with how a calender looks and to give them more confidence with numbers, but most of all to enjoy and engage in matching, sorting, patterning, and number recognition

Unit of Inquiry

This week we focused on the show and tell and things that I can do. We had a really good discussion. The next step will be making videos. We will let parents know how we are going to do this.

In Literacy

We continued with 'We are going on a bear hunt. We made a floor map and retold the story in our own words.

Outdoor learning

Benefits of outdoor learning

Outdoor learning is an important part of child development and I do want to roll this opportunity out. There is more learning than just being inside the classrooms.  Outdoor learning also provides a wealth of opportunities for the children to demonstrate and practice the attributes of the IB learner profile in a way that cannot be replaced in a classroom setting. As children climb and explore physical challenges they learn to develop their own understandings about the boundaries and explore what it means to be courageous risk-takers. The children are knowledgeable as they ask questions and build their own theories about the changes they observe in the natural world.

This week we started with our group rotations. The outdoor area is part of our classroom and we loved exploring numbers, construction, and water area this week.

Communication and Language/Phonics

This week we finally have our differentiated focused groups

  • We focused on forming letters in our name
  • Practiced listening and speaking games
  • Worked on our Alliteration.  Listening for the initial sounds in words.

Free choice

Play-based learning and free-choice time. We always have time for a choice time where learners choose the areas they enjoy the most. This week we brainstormed on making our 'Creative area more inviting and this is what we as a class came up with. Learners were very engaged and tried all the different resources available for them in the area. Learners all also chose different areas in our classroom. Overall, we love our classroom!

Next Week

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3TAU5O7F1M

 Pete the cat - Song

Do a read-aloud of the book "Pete the Cat - Rocking in my school shoes".

Ask children what different things they can do at our school -

What is the same/different from the book?

Watch the video and get the children to join in with the song.

Discuss the children's favourite places to play at school.

What do they do there?

Write down a list of different things they can do at school.

Take  photos of each child doing their favourite thing and scribe "I'm _____ in my school shoes."

Mathematics

Learning target:

  •  Shows an interest in numerals in the environment.

  •  Shows an interest in representing numbers.

  •  Shows interest in shapes in the environment.

Assessment week: To see where the learners are in Math. Next step: To group the children to be able to focus on their mathematical skills.

Literacy/Talk4writing

Looks at books independently.

Handles books carefully.

Provocation: Small world area - Introduce the book cover- Talk about the cover

Monday-   Introduce Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see? Encourage learners to explore different ways of moving to represent different animals seen in the story. They could flap their arms to represent the red bird, pretend to swim like the fish, gallop like the horse, jump like the frog, and pretend to swing through the trees like the monkey.

Extension: Play a ‘traffic light listening game’ with Picture cards. Take the learners to a large space such as a hall or outdoor area. Show them the picture cards and explain that the red card means stop, the orange card means slow and the green card means fast. As they move around the space, they need to listen to instructions (red, orange and green) and move accordingly.

Tuesday-  Have learners sit in a circle while music plays. One child will sit in the center of the circle while the other children pass a brown bear behind their backs. When the music stops, the child in the center of the circle must guess who has the brown bear. Continue with our story and repeat the actions.

Extension:  Brown Bear Puzzles, Colouring, Bear counting

Thursday-  Repeat the story and stop to see if the children remember what happens next in the story? Who is the next character?

Golden Friday -  Dress up Friday - learners will have a dressing up day where they wear their favourite colours or dress as one of the colourful animals from the story. Talk about favourite colours and favourite animals. As a circle time idea, pass a teddy bear around a circle and encourage the learners to share what colour animal they would like to see such as purple panda, a pink rabbit or a silver shark.

Important Notice

Mystery Reader

Dear Parent

This year we would like to run a new initiative to promote the importance of reading and literacy and to improve school-parent connections.

On the last Friday of each month, the EY classes will be asking for a ‘Mystery Reader’ to read a story of their choosing in whatever language they would like. This can be done either through Google Meet or by sending a pre-recorded video to show the children.

The first date for this will be Friday 25th September 2020.

In class, the teacher will be getting the children excited about our ‘Mystery Readers’ and we may even play games to try and guess who it might be. If you decide to sign up for the Mystery Reader, please do not tell your child! It will be a fun and exciting surprise for them!

Please help us to encourage a love of reading for your children by volunteering to sign up and be a ‘Mystery Reader’.

Kind regards

EY Team

All About Me!

Show and Tell

Dear Parents,

Our goal in this current Unit of Inquiry' “ Who We Are” is to

encourage students to express themselves and recognise that they are special in their own way. Please help your child bring one item from home that they really like and represent them. If the learners wish to keep their items in our classroom museum, that is absolutely fine to do so and we will make sure that their things are safe with us. This show and tell activity is to provide learning opportunities and to incorporate communication skills, listening skills, and build confidence.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Ms Phibz
